Making our come back!

by Webb Road Flea Market on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 9:43pm

I will never forget the feeling I felt as I arrived in the Webb Road Flea Market this weekend... knowing that the time that I and so many others had waited so long for had finally came, the moment when we would sign the papers making our occupancy valid and receive the keys to what we can now call a brand new beginning. It was amazing the feeling of achievement and  the rush of opportunity when I clutched those keys that  seemed to give me the forgiveness that I had longed for months since that tragic day when fire sweep through and took our market away.

Immediately I ran to find my space, my heart pounding with excitement as I inserted my key in every door until I found the proper match.  I could never have imagined the feeling that would come over me as I  opened  that door, it was  like a light from heaven,  an answer to my prayer.  I felt as if  I could hear those walls speaking to me ... " Come in ..you have made it, here is your land of opportunity".  Accompanied by friends and family I walked into that room and just embraced the walls, floors and  stared at the ceiling and said beneath my breathe "Thank you Lord for your Blessing on Me"

I  feel so blessed to know that someone cared enough to do what ever it took to clean up the burned rubble and rebuild this market giving the victims a second chance. With only a limited amount of spaces to rent and hundreds of people wanting them and yet I was chosen to be a part of this great opportunity and like so many of the vendors who are victims of the fire, I have been  given a chance to build a new business, make new friends and reunite our Webb rd family that has continued to stand strong together through out this  tragic time.

Today I am pledging to do my part to make this market the best that it can be. I want to be the positive light that shines throughout this land of opportunity and  spread the smile of satisfaction to everyone around me by promoting happiness, I believe that is recipe to making  this the best market in the country. I know that an overload of love and happiness will make these buildings an unforgettable place to shop, drawing people to come back again and again and encouraging them to tell their friends and family.           ........  That folks is our key to success!

So want you Please join me in spreading the cheer.....We have so much to Thankful for........

                              .........WE ARE ALL BLESSED!

SALISBURY — The new Webb Road Flea Market going up off Interstate 85 will be more fire-resistant
than its predecessor, says Catherine Popp, one of the property’s owners.

But vendors might feel like setting off fireworks when the new market opens over the July 4 weekend.

The old market’s wooden structures burned to the ground on Sept. 3. Investigators said they probably
would never know what caused the fire.

LaFave’s Construction Co. of Landis is at work on the new market, which will have metal buildings with
wood-post frames. No sprinkler system is required or planned, Popp said, but the buildings will have
fire alarms, enhanced security and surveillance cameras.

The flea market will hold a grand opening on July 1 and be open the entire holiday weekend, through
 Monday, July 4.

Interest from vendors has been strong, Popp says. “We are better than 50 percent leased.”

The market will have 10 buildings, each 12,000 square feet. A covered breezeway brings the total square
footage to 130,000, she said.

That will include two buildings that are fully enclosed and heated, six buildings that are enclosed and
unheated and two open, shed-type buildings.

“You’ll be able to see us from the highway,” she said. “We’ll have a red roof.”

Spaces will be 10-by-10 feet, 10-by-20 feet and 10-by-30 feet, with lockable storage areas in the larger spaces.

Spaces in the open-air sheds will be leased out for $14 a day, with those vendors required to take their goods
home each day.

Large vendors who have committed so far include Furniture and Dan’s Tools, Popp said.

Two produce vendors are joining the lineup, she said, and a food-court-type area will include an American grill
and a Mexican restaurant. Funnel cakes, ice cream and other snacks will be available.

Technically the market’s address and entrance will be on nearby Leach Road, in keeping with zoning requirements.
But it will still be called the Webb Road Flea Market.

Popp said her father, Tom Walton, and his partners opened the original Webb Road Flea market in 1985.

Other owners now include her husband, Joey Popp, and sister and brother-in-law Libby and Chris Stephens
of Morganton.

Buddy Johnson has continued to manage the flea market, which missed only one week of operation after the fire.
